Terry Battenberg fell into basketball. Born in the basketball hot-bed of Fort Wayne, Indiana, he spent 15 years as a Hoosier until his parents moved him to Sacramento, California. Learning the game in the barnyards and playgrounds of Indiana served him well as he moved up the ladder from playing in high school and college, to eventually coaching high school and college basketball.
Thrust into his first varsity head coaching experience at the age of 22, Battenberg directed Jesuit High School of Sacramento to a 26-2 record and a Northern California Championship. Led by 6 10 All-American Mark Wehrle, that Jesuit team convinced Coach Battenberg how important it was to have a good post man. In 1978, he published his first book on post play,
The Complete Book of Basketball Post Play, and much later followed that up with his second book in 2007,
Power Post Play.
As a coach, Battenberg has been a four-year college assistant (to Ralph Miller at Oregon State University) and head coach (Montana Tech College), as well as a junior college assistant and head coach (American River College); plus, he has coached four different Sacramento area high schools to league championships. During his 22 years as a high school coach, his teams have produced an All-League Post Man in 21 of those 22 years.
Besides coaching, Battenberg has been an educator and a radio and TV sportscaster, and he now runs his own business - Fast Break. He has directed Post Man Camps all along the West Coast, has been a speaker at many clinics, and has published articles for several publications.
